Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Kumou Chuutarou (last, first)
◎ Character's Canon: Donten ni Warau
◎ Character's Age: 12
◎ Canon Point: End of chapter 29 of DnW

◎ Background/History:
Every 300 years, the cloudy sky above Shiga Village heralds the arrival of the giant snake demon Orochi. The Orochi has a curse which allows it to possess a member of certain family lines, such as the Abe or Kumou. Until the Orochi reveals itself, it is near impossible to tell who the person that is possessed is. The Orochi was considered unbeatable and was always just barely sealed away again, until this most recent reincarnation, in Meiji 11 (circa 1877). The Kumou family and their shrine was established hundreds of years ago to protect Shiga village and the area around the country's largest lake, Lake Biwa, fromthe Orochi when it appears, and criminals in the interim.

Chuutarou was born as the third son to the head of the Kumou shrine, after Tenka and Soramaru. He doesn't actually remember his mother and father, because when he was one year old, one of the Fuuma twins came and killed both parents and injured his brothers. For the next eleven years and into the main story Chuutarou has been raised primarily by oldest-brother Tenka, with help from middle-brother Soramaru, Shirasu the Fuuma-turned-housekeeper and the village of Shiga that the Kumou Shrine is near.

When he was younger, he was bullied some by the other children for having no parents. Tenka confronted the bullies and their parents and resolved the problem.

During the beginning of the story, Chuutarou is mostly seen goofing around with his brothers, chasing and ferrying criminals with Soramaru, and going to school in the village.

One of the first major incidents that happen in the series is Chuutarou waiting for his brothers and being confronted by Kagami Naoto, a recently escaped convict. After Kagami tried to entice Chuutarou to ferry him to the prison, his brothers came and recaptured the convict.

Not long afterwards, Tenka, Chuutarou's 23 year old brother was arrested, officially because of some damage to the prison at the center of Lake Biwa, and unofficially under the suspicion of being the host to the Orochi. The punishment for hosting the Orochi is death.

After Tenka's execution, Chuutarou is inconsolable and spends an inordinate amount of time waiting on the steps of the shrine for him to come back. At one point he runs into the forest in an attempt to find Tenka, and is found instead by the once-again-escaped Kagami Naoto. Kagami convinces Chuutarou to come with him and avenge Tenka's "murder" by the government. They spend the next several days travelling over the mountains, and then travelling back to Shiga in time for the final confrontation with Orochi.

While Chuutarou was away, it was revealed that his 16 year old brother is actually the host of the Orochi and that the Fuuma ninja whom everyone believed to be wiped out were actually gathering an opium-addicted army of felons so the Orochi may destroy the country. Thankfully, Tenka wasn't actually killed and managed to appear along with the military group created to fight the Orochi, and with them Chuutarou helped separate the Orochi from Soramaru. Chuutarou then assisted Soramaru with dealing the deathblow to the Orochi that only he, as the host, could preform.

◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nope!

◎ Personality: outgoing, warm, caring .. sheltered, naive, dependent .. trusting

Chuutarou is a very open person. What you see most of the time is exactly what you get. He was raised almost primarily by his oldest brother Tenka, and takes on a lot of Tenka's philosophies, including one of being open with how you feel, so negative emotions don't drag you down and there is more room for the happy ones. Chuutarou almost takes this to an extreme: he shows his emotions as he gets them, he speaks his mind, and doesn't lie. Part of wearing his own heart on his sleeve, he doesn't realize not everyone else does too. There were several times in the manga Chuutarou believed what someone said, even though they were not totally truthful and ended up getting into misunderstandings. Sometime this can be harmless, like misinterpreting his brother Soramaru as angry instead of annoyed and frustrated at other things. Other times it can lead to not so harmless consequences--like almost helping a criminal because he didn't realize someone would have bad intentions when asking about where his brother Tenka was. He also tends to take statements said to him very literally to go with his straightforwardness.

In addition to the honest openness, Chuutarou is very warm. He cares for all manner of people, from his brothers to his teacher, to even the criminal that once tried to coerce him into killing people. He gave Kagami Naoto, the criminal, a hug and asked him to give up his revenge on the emperor to live a life with the Kumous. To Chuutarou it didn't matter about all the bad things Kagami had previously done, to the Kumou or otherwise, only that he would live his life doing good to make up the bad from that point on. It hadn't worked much more than gaining his slight cooperation in the fight against the Orochi, but it was certainly something not everyone would attempt.

Something Chuutarou is very adamant about is protecting those weaker than yourself. To him, it's the strong's duty to keep those weaker than them safe, regardless if that means from someone who was an ally. It is a principle that doesn't matter to what alliance the people are on, the weak are to be protected. When he first watches the Yamainu captain capture a criminal his brothers had been fighting, he was visibly horrified at Sousei's cutthroat actions. Chuutarou didn't like that Sousei thought to use his sheathed sword to jab into the criminal's throat, using unnecessary force to cripple. This principle was taught to him for his family's job of rounding up escaped prisoners and being the ferrymen across Lake Biwa to the Condemned Prison Gate, Japan's largest prison, as well as an ingrained instinct to do no unnecessary harm to anybody.

Quite a bit about Chuutarou can be can be understood if you were to look at how he was raised. His most primary influence, the person he's often tried to emulate, is Tenka. More than once Chuutarou will say Tenka is the "one true king of my world" or that he is "the rule." Tenka means more to Chuutarou than anything else. He went as far as to storm the execution grounds against the police just to reach Tenka, to try and convince him to come back with Soramaru and himself. When that doesn't work, Chuutarou stubbornly insists he sits out on the steps of the shrine waiting for Tenka to return for weeks. He only moves off of them when forced, or when Kagami Naoto makes his reappearance. This time he tells Chuutarou he can get revenge for Tenka's murder, by going with Kagami to kill the Emperor. He agrees and travels with Kagami away from Shiga and towards Tokyo, all the while acting very lifeless. While away with Kagami, Chuutarou manages to see the sky for the first time in his life. With the drastic shift in his perspective from Tenka being gone, the sight doesn't inspire any sort of wonder like what previously would have been expected. Instead all it gets is the comment "it's darker than I imagined," possibly a side effect of Tenka, the guiding light in his life (the sun) gone.

During this period is when Chuutarou starts questioning Kagami more about why he wants revenge, and trying to talk him out of it. This was because the longer and longer he was away, and the more Kagami talks down on Chuutarou's skills (or lack-there-of) and about how his brothers raised him to be naive and spoiled into softness, Chuutarou starts to doubt revenge. Once he comes to the conclusion Tenka wouldn't want him to fester in seeking revenge, he tries to get Kagami to come back with him to the Kumou, to atone together for any sins they've done and live freely and happily. When these two, near literally, get herded into the final battle with the Orochi they become separated. While Kagami didn't seem to want to follow what Chuutarou told him, he did lend him one of the segments of his swords to battle the Orochi with, and they seemed to part on respectful terms.

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
Caltrops, and his hat made by Soramaru

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: Air

◎ Sense: Touch! As a Kumou, and especially as a Kumou modelling himself after Tenka, Chuutarou is very physical-contact oriented. Physical contact is a daily near-constant in his life. Even a criminal who attacked his brothers is promised as many pats and hugs as he wants, if only he stopped living solely for revenge.

At first, the world is little more than a mass of colors. Little dots of colors mixing and blurring before settling into what he first thought was his home. Not the Shrine, no, not that home, but the Shiga village.

But then what Chuutarou was looking at really solidified.

It was the village, yes, but it was a ruin. Rubble lined the street, large holes dotted the well-packed roads, off to his right he could see the the kind grandma's vegetable stand over turned and--

The thought breaks off, as the youngest Kumou sees what's under the collapsed stand. It was a wrinkled hand with tiny furrows leading out from the fingertips.

Several agonizing eternity-seconds pass before Chuutarou breaks off his staring and starts off at a wobbly walk that morphs into a frantic dash to check and see if there was anyone ali--injured that needs help. Too many he passes he's known forever. None are moving. It's only when he reaches the end of the row of buildings--the carpenter and the smith always gossiped here every weekend--that he noticed the flicker of fast moving steel at the corner of his eye.

He dropped to the ground and the thrown kunai sailed past him. Moving his hat up and out of his eyes, he saw a white-haired man in black and purple. Was that--"Sh-shiro-nii?" but no, even as he says it, he knows it's not him. Even at this distance Chuutarou could recognize Shiro-nii had longer hair and narrower shoulders then the man. But it was a Fuuma ninja.

He regained his feet while warily watching the ninja. Several moments of a stalemate pass before Chuutarou steps forward. In the space of that one step the adult vanished. The boy gnashed his teeth together before running in the direction the Fuuma had been in.

As he traveled, more and more villagers turned up. The scenery became more and more familiar as well. As the Kumou Shrine got closer and closer down the road, Chuutarou pushed himself to go faster and faster. He knew he had to get there soon, every moment counted.

At the end of the road disaster waited.

Wood debris, broken weapons, bodies coated the bottom of the hill the shrine was on. Many of them were Fuuma; something Chuutarou wasn't expecting. He gingerly picked his way around the bodies. Try as he might though, several had names popping unbidden to him. Each accompanied more and more tears and pangs of loss.

On the path up the stairs: the two police officers. The doctor. Botan-sensei. A little further, the half-Fuuma girl Nishiki. Kagami Naoto. Most of the way up: Shiro-nii. Ten-nii.

At the top: Sora-nii. Just beyond him, where the shrine should be, was the Orochi.

He was alone. Against the Orochi. His brothers look like they gave it quite the fight before--before they left it to him. One eye was jaggedly cut through, along with several deep lines carved around its head and neck.

And he'll do it, for them. The youngest Kumou brother won't let his big brothers down.
